Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Quintana Roo on the 20th of March.

A large-scale search and rescue mission is actively under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of unlocated sailing vessels transporting relief goods traveling from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Efforts Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and search planes to search for the two vessels, which were transporting at least nine personnel, per a navy statement.

The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in Cuba's capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their safe arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Relief to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island struggles through repeated nationwide blackouts.

"The crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a representative associated with the mission commented.

The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from each country along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and warmly received a different ship that had carried a significant amount of relief supplies to the nation.

That vessel, called "Granma 2.0" following the name of the yacht in which the revolutionary leader returned to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Backdrop

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation began.

The United Nations have since highlighted "dire" shortages of supplies, with more than 50k surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have increased lately, with statements from various leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Reacting to certain statements, a prominent Cuban official declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their present status remains uncertain.

The Mexican navy said it was dedicated to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
