On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Defying suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for worry of being called radical,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
