The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network launched a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness resonated deeply and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this charming family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well catalyze that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
