The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
