The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only came this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
