The former Liverpool manager admits rejoining to manage Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Liverpool in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club remains a possibility. Klopp, post a game-changing near-decade reign which brought continental glory and the Premier League crown since 1990, now holds roles overseeing worldwide football with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity with the German Football League.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title last season, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would be thrilled by the notion of his potential comeback. During an extensive chat, he explained to Steven Bartlett: “I said I will never coach another team on English soil. Therefore in case it's my former club...absolutely. It's plausible.”
“Being 58, that means the choice could be mine down the line, who knows. Do I have to make the decision today? If so, I wouldn't return. But thank God, it's not necessary. I can just see what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Pressed on the specific conditions would need to occur to bring him back to the dugout, he confessed he was not instantly drawn to such a return. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; I don’t miss standing during downpours for lengthy sessions; I don’t miss going to interviews repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats each week.
“The locker room isn't missed as a dressing room, but sitting in a restaurant with the players talking freely, that’s nice. With many victories meaning regularly a very good mood around the place. I can still hear Van Dijk's laughter vividly recalled to illustrate.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended of the current boss, crediting him due to the changes that took the title last campaign. Liverpool have lost four in a row in all competitions after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the notion that it might signal the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward like Florian Wirtz, critics will regret if you use the wrong words. He’s an incredible talent. Ekitike, superb talent. They have a strong balanced team. No need for concern regarding the Reds, things will improve.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
He shared movingly on the loss of Diogo Jota, a player he signed while in charge, along with the consequences for the team. Jota lost his life in a vehicle collision alongside his brother this past summer.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? This isn't just regarding his footballing ability, it’s the guy he was. I struggle to conceive the team environment without him in it. I still cannot speak properly on this topic. A profound tragedy for the entire squad too. No one within the club would cite it for poor performances but it is the situation. You walk in a dressing room where his spirit remains. Handling this individually is challenging. Unbearable.”
