The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

Design circles laments the passing to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
