Senegal's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.
As I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and European Arrival
That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”
