The British tennis star earned the most important win of his professional journey by coming back from a lost first set to beat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously overcome Alcaraz on two separate matches, this victory marks Norrie's first ever win over a current world number one.

"Enormous. So big for me," commented Norrie, who is now the newest English competitor in history to beat a global number one. "Coming back from injury last year, I fell in the first round of qualifiers here. I just aimed to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the most significant victory of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the world No 1 and probably the most in-form player in the sport right now."

Norrie, positioned 31st globally, also halted Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive elite tournament victories, which represented the finest stretch of results in the Spaniard's early professional path.

Alcaraz looked to be moving confidently to a win at the start as he cruised through the initial stanza. However, Norrie gradually battled back into contention by delivering with improved accuracy and dragging the Spanish opponent into prolonged, physical points. His persistent consistency and dependability steadily made an impact.

During large parts of the battle, Alcaraz served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The rising talent looked notably struggling striking his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the sport for much of this year, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie presented his opponent very few errors, maintaining his steadiness, fitness and power throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to force himself into the court and strike effectively.
