A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
